Resistencia del Plasmodium Falciparum a la combinación de los tres primeros casos en Colombia
Abstract
Sulfadoxine combined with pyrimethamine (S-P) is used as a synergistic drug combination and has been successfully employed in chloroquine-resistant infections of P. falciparum since 1964. We hereby describe the first documented three cases of resistance to such drug combinations in Colombia in patients from San Jose del Guaviare and the Ariari Valley, where chloroquine-resistant infections have also been found. Tetracycline combined with a rapid-acting blood schizontocide such as quinine or amodiaquine is a suitable alternative to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine combinations. Chloroquine should only be used in combination with tetracycline in patients with low parasite counts and when the acute attacks of malaria can be controlled by this treatment regimen.
