Editors

Luis Alberto Gómez

M.D., Ph.D. Physician-Surgeon of the National University of Colombia. Doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Post-doctorate in Cardiovascular Diseases, Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, United States of America. Founder and coordinator of the Molecular Physiology Group of the Colombian Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS). He was elected Fellow of the Commission of Life Sciences, National Academies of Sciences, USA, of the Institute for Genomic Research-Craig Venter Institute (Rockville, Maryland, USA) and of the Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA). He is currently working on two lines of research: On the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cardio-protection, and on the molecular basis of cell differentiation and malignant transformation. He has published more than 50 original articles in national and international journals, including book chapters. He has directed several undergraduate, Master's, doctoral and postdoctoral thesis. He has been Research Director of the National Institute of Health, a member of the National Biotechnology Council on two occasions and of the National Council of Basic Sciences in two periods. He is editor in chief of Biomédica, Professor of the Department of Physiological Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Colombia and a corresponding member of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences.

Carlos Arturo Hernández Ch.

He obtained the Bachelor of Arts from Yale University in 1971 with a scholarship from the LASPAU program. He won a teaching fellowship in Spanish and Hispanic American Literature at Phillips Academy, Andover, MA, and there he learned photography.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University in 1981. He joined the INS as a scholarship student in 1976, being responsible for the darkroom work of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory. He was an intern at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Antioquia. He did his rural year at the INS in an investigation sponsored by the National Cancer Institute under the direction of the IARC and the coordination of the INS.

He was a member of the INS Environment Health Group and being there he was nominated for a PAHO scholarship with which he graduated in 1986 as a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. He worked in the INS Parasitology Group from 1987 to 1993, and was responsible for organizing the external consultation of leishmaniasis; then, he was appointed head of the Library and Publications Division until 2005. He completed the Specialization in Multimedia Design from the Faculty of Arts at the National University and graduated in 2006

He has been a translator, proofreader, and editor of numerous publications at national and international entities. In 2002, he created a seminar-workshop on the elaboration and writing of scientific manuscripts, which he has already taught on more than one hundred occasions for Colombian and Latin American professionals. His collaboration in Biomédica began in 1983 and presently he is responsible for the final version of each of the issues; he has been its cover photo editor since 1996.

Rubén Santiago Nicholls

Surgeon graduated in August 1983 from the National University of Colombia. He joined the Parasitology Group of the Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS) in 1984. Still working there he traveled, in the period from September 1986 to September 1987 to London to obtain his Master's degree in Medical Parasitology. There he also obtained the Diploma in Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of London.

During his professional career, his main emphasis has been to contribute to the knowledge and prevention and control of tropical parasitic diseases that are endemic in Colombia and in Latin America and the Caribbean, working in two Colombian institutions, the INS (1984-2008) and the National University of Colombia (1990-2008), as well as at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO), since 2008. From April 2012 to February 2016, he served as Regional Advisor for Leprosy and Sub-regional Advisor at the Department of Neglected Diseases of PAHO based in Brasilia, Brazil. From March 1, 2016, to date he has served as Regional Advisor for Neglected Infectious Diseases at PAHO in Washington. As of 1998, he has been a member of Biomédica’s Editorial Committee.

Julián Alfredo Fernández Niño

Medical Doctor graduated from the National University of Colombia (2007), with a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Antioquia (2012), Master of Science in Biostatistics from the National Institute of Public Health of México (2013) and a Doctorate in Sciences in Epidemiology from the same institution. He has worked as a research professor at the School of Public Health of México, the Industrial University of Santander in Colombia and Department of Public Health at the Universidad del Norte. He was also Director of Epidemiology and Demography of the Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social of Colombia during the Covid-19 pandemic. He has worked on various research projects on public health and epidemiology among vulnerable populations in México and Colombia. His areas of interest include statistical analysis applied to public health, social epidemiology, mental health, aging and, more recently, the relationship between migration and health. Currently, he is a Scientific Assistant at the Bloomberg School of Public Health in Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore ( MD, United States) where works developing strategies to improve the quality of health information systems and national health surveys in low and middle-income countries.

José Moreno Montoya

Graduated as statistician at the Faculty of Sciences of the National University of Colombia (Bogotá, Colombia, 2004); Master in Clinical Epidemiology of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the National University of Colombia; recognition as a young researcher by the Colombian Administrative Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Colciencias) in 2004 and 2005. He holds a Ph.D. in Science in Epidemiology from the National Institute of Public Health of México (2012) and his doctoral dissertation obtained meritorious mention. He obtained his postdoctoral degree at the end of 2016. He has been a researcher at the General Hospital of and the National Institute of Public Health of México, the Colombian Instituto Nacional de Salud and the National University and has worked as a graduate professor and supervisor of Master and doctoral thesis in different private and public universities in Colombia, México, and Spain. He has experience in systematic literature reviews with certification from the Cochrane Collaboration and in university teaching from the Colombian Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. He has participated in the publication of two books and various articles in indexed scientific journals of international circulation. His areas of interest include epidemiological methods, causality theory, and statistical analysis applied to epidemiology. Additionally, he has been a reviewer and evaluator of different national and international journals, newsletters, and institutions.

Orlando Torres-Fernández

He is a biologist from the National University, with a Master's Degree in Morphology and a Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences from Universidad del Valle. Master in Psychobiology and Cognitive Neuroscience of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Specialized Professional of the Research Division at the Instituto Nacional de Salud and Coordinator of the Cell Morphology Group. He is ranked as an senior researcher in Colciencias classification. He has worked as a scientific researcher and university professor in basic neuroscience, neurovirology, histology, cell biology, and comparative embryology, with extensive experience in electron microscopy and ultrastructural analysis.

Omar Segura

He is a Surgeon from the Colombian Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Doctor of Public Health from the National University, Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, Field Epidemiologist from the Colombian INS/TEPHINET Program, specialized in Epidemiology at the Medical School of the Juan N Corpas University, and he has a diploma in pharmacovigilance, in university teaching, and in virtual courses organization. He is a thesis supervisor and jury in the fields of Epidemiology, Public Health, biostatistics, project management, and research methodology. He has worked as a consultant and advisor in local and national health entities and multilateral organizations. He has been a peer reviewer and jury in national and international journals and congresses. He has been an associate peer researcher and evaluator for Colciencias (2017) and a lifetime member of the International Epidemiology Association (IEA), a member of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE), the Colombian Medical Federation (FMC), the Colombian Association of Epidemiology (ASOCEPI), the Colombian Association of Public Health (ACSP), and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

Magdalena Wiesner

She is a Biologist from the INCCA University of Colombia (2002), she has a Doctorate in Sciences from the National Autonomous University of México (2012) and a Postdoctorate from the same university (2013). She was recognized as a young researcher by the Administrative Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Colciencias) in 2004. In 2012, she was favored by the Postdoctoral Scholarship Program of the National Autonomous University of México. She is ranked as a junior researcher by Colciencias (2018). She has been a researcher since 2002. She has 13 years of experience in the management of enteropathogens, the implementation of molecular techniques for phylogenetic analysis, virulence factors, resistance factors, plasmid manipulation, and in the handling of bioinformatic programs for sequence analysis and participation, as well as in the design and improvement of diagnostic methodologies. Her passion is the investigation of plasmid elements and resistance mechanisms. Since 2013, she has worked as a researcher in the Microbiology Group at the Colombian Instituto Nacional de Salud, advising research projects in enteropathogens, and as a tutor for undergraduate, magister and doctoral students.

Erika Santamaría

Graduated in Chemistry and Biology from La Salle University in Bogotá, with a Master's degree in Biology and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Javeriana University. She is a specialized professional in the Entomology Group of the Public Health Research Directorate at the Colombian Instituto Nacional de Salud. She has led several research projects in the area of medical entomology and tutored young researchers, as well as undergraduate and Master's students. She has extensive experience in the design and development of ecology, taxonomy, distribution, colonization, vector competition, susceptibility to insecticides, and evaluation of insect vector control measures for pathogens.

Enrique Ardila

Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the National University of Colombia; Internal Medicine Specialist from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, USA; associate researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland; Endocrinology specialist and Ph.D. candidate from the Faculté de Medicine, Université de Paris, France; he has a Diploma in Anthropology from the School of Anthropology in Paris and he is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Endocrinology from Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. He received the Diploma Internuniversitaire d´Evaluation de la Qualité en Médecine and Attestation de Formation Specialiseé Approfondie en Médecine Interne, at Claude Bernard Univerity in Lyon, France, and he is a specialist in journalism from Los Andes University in Bogotá.

He was a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Colombia for 25 years and there he developed the line of research in bone metabolism and held the positions of director of the Department of Internal Medicine, academic director of the Faculty of Medicine, director of medical-surgical postgraduate courses, and creator as well as the first director of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology. He also helped in the creation of the Master's Program in Clinical Epidemiology and the Geriatrics specialty of the Faculty of Medicine at the same University. He has been a visiting professor at the Universidad Industrial de Santander and director of Human Resources at the Colombian Ministry of Health.

He created the National University radio program “Diagnóstico” 20 years ago, as well as the program "Ciencia, salud y sociedad" at the Luis Carlos Galán radio station in Bucaramanga. On the Telmex TV channel, he conducted the program "Canitas al aire" and on the National Radio of Colombia, the program "Formas de vida". He was part of the Editorial Committee of the Colombian Journal of Cancerology and currently, he is the editor of the Colombian Journal of Endocrinology. Besides, he was the representative of the Cochrane Collaboration in the country.

Linda Grace Molano Cetina

She graduated from Social Communication and Journalism at Corporación Universidad Minuto de Dios and obtained her Training and Education Innovation Techniques and Masters in Education and from the Tecnológico de Monterrey (México). She did her internship as a social communicator at the Colombian Red Cross Bogotá Regional Section for Doctrine and Protection (2001-2002). During the first semester of 2004, she worked at the Science and Technology News Agency, NOTICyT, at the Colombian Association of Science Journalism, and as of the second semester of 2004, she has been the Editorial assistant of Biomédica at the Instituto Nacional de Salud.


Elizabeth Guzmán Caballero

She graduated as a Social Communicator with an emphasis on journalism and public opinion from the Universidad Externado de Colombia and obtained her Master’s degree in Digital Communication from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.
She worked as a journalist in the culture section at El Tiempo newspaper and at the Communications office in Universidad Externado de Colombia. She was part of the first stage evaluation teams of the National Short Story Contest sponsored by RCN radio broadcaster and the Ministry of National Education in their sixth and seventh versions.
She has worked for Biomédica at the Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS) since 2013 in charge of the journal’s digital marketing (creation and management of brand social media profiles; design and distribution of newsletters for target audiences, web analytics, and distribution of notifications for authors, among others) and of registering the journal’s issue data in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation online platform Publindex for periodical indexing and in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database  (LILACS).

She also gives support to the INS Public Health Research Department in activities related to her academic and professional training.

Luz Ángela Salgado

She graduated from Graphic Design with an emphasis on Editorial Design at the Escuela de Artes y Letras where her final graduate projects centered on book layout and illustration were awarded the highest honors for their technical and professional level. During the first semester of 2014, she did her internship at the School of Social Sciences at the Universidad de Los Andes designing graphic pieces and giving support in the layout and design process of the journal Sextante. She has also worked in the layout and design of DirecTV journal and in other projects at Leo Burnet advertising agency (2016). In 2019, she joined Biomédica’s editorial team and is in charge of its layout and design.


Diana Alexandra Londoño

Biologist with a Master's degree in Infections Diseases and Health in the Tropics. PhD candidate in Biochemistry at the National University of Colombia. Her career includes basic and applied research in different areas, such as cellular, molecular, and tumor biology, parasitology, virology, and immunology. Her most recent research is associated with adoptive immunotherapies development at the Instituto Distrital de Ciencia, Biotecnología e Innovación en Salud. She has experience editing, proofreading, and translating medical and scientific texts. Since 2023, she has been linked to the Biomédica journal team.
