Abstract

With the use of peroxidase unlabeled antibody method and inmunofluorescence in deparaffinized-trypsin-treated tissues, a set o human placentas and malignant tumors have been studied inmunocytochemically. Factors influencing the sensitivity and specificity of these methods were explored. Using an anti-HCG antibody, human choriogonadotropin (HCG) has been successfully localized in the syncytial trophoblast of the placentas in different stages of development, with cytotrophoblast cells islands and Langhans cells being negative. Sections of human malignant tumors were found to react with this antibody. It is postulated that both selective host inmunosuppression by tumors and selective maternal inmuno-suppression by fetal tissues may be mediated by HCG.
