Abstract

During the second half of 1982 a search for mosquitoes belonging to the genus Haemagogus was performed in the urban and rural areas of the departament of La Guajira, Colombia, South America covering the influence area of the charcoal mine of El Cerrejon. Three species of Haemagogus were collected in the urban area: H. anastasionis, H. Celeste and H. equinus. In the rural area were collected four species: H. anastasionis, H. celeste,H. equinus and H. janthinomys; these four species were captured in pre-mountainous wet forest. In the xerophytic, dry area, were collected three species. H. janthinomys was only detected in pre-moustainous wet forest. In the xerophytic area a high density of H. anastasionis and H. equinus was found. It was demonstrated the biological importance of the cactus Lemaireocereus griseur Britt & Rose and of the tree Prosopis juliflora (S.W) D.C. in the development of the inmadure stages of H. anastasionis and H.equinus.
